Here is the beginning of some beautiful Orange Gerber Daisies…

The flowers really added some beautiful color to an elegant cake that just started with subtle hand-pipped scrolling. Complete with a tree stump stand, the finished product was perfect for a traditional yet rustic reception.

Pinwheels

With summer drawing to a quick end, it’s fun to remember some designs that kept with the spirit of the season. This shabby-chic bride wanted an earthly but airy feel to her August wedding, hence the pinwheel theme. Dozens of hand-crafted pinwheels not only accented their topsy-turvy cake, but were decor of the reception as well! The concept was such a neat alternative to florals and created a romantic yet eccentric atmosphere. We loved collaborating with this creative couple who put a unique “spin” on a traditional concept.

I love this stunning color combination of navy blue and fuchsia. Just a touch of the accent color can really make the cake come to life. This cake gets it’s modern look from combining different height tiers with varying patterns.

Planning for your wedding cake…

Marriage.com recently asked to give a few tips on how to plan for your wedding cake. So we decided to share that information with our readers too. You can see the full post on their site at www.marriage.com

1. Time & Location of Wedding- Be sure to have your date and location reserved prior to meeting with your baker, they will need to know this information for delivery purposes and planning other events around yours as their dates start filling up.

2. Always take inspiration items to your appointment- Things like embroidery from your gown, a design from your invitation, and color swatches can be a great way to help your designer personalize your wedding cake. Certainly bring pictures of other cakes you like. Most designers don’t like to recreate someone else’s work exactly, but maybe they can make a slight change to make it your own. Besides, what bride wants the same exact cake as another bride? Be creative, be original.

3. Dress your cake table- It is important to use a linen color that will complement your cake. Your designer can likely recommend the best color choice for you. If your cake is all white, you should choose a color that matches your wedding and offsets the all white cake. It is difficult to photograph an all white cake on a white linen. You can also place things on the table to enhance the decor: cake knife serving set, champagne toasting glasses, candles, toss bouquet, rose petals, etc.

4. Don’t save your top tier for your first anniversary- Year old cake doesn’t taste good, not much does! Most bakers will provide you with a freshly baked cake to celebrate with or offer you a discount. So use that to your advantage and skip out on a frost bitten slice or tier in your new freezer.

5. Don’t forget the groom’s cake. This is a tradition that is on the come back. The history of a groom’s cake goes like this: The groom’s cake was not to be served to the guests while at the wedding reception, but rather it was to be sliced up, placed into packages and given to them as favors when they departed. Single women at the wedding would take their pieces of cake home and sleep with it under their pillows in hopes of dreaming of their future husbands. Personally, I think it’s the one thing in the entire wedding that represents the groom. Let’s face it ladies, we all want the wedding of our dreams and most groom’s are willing to give us whatever we want, even if it means pink everywhere. Give him something that represents him. It could be a hobby, favorite sports team, or a work related item, anything that screams “groom.” Check out some groom’s cakes we’ve created below.

On Monday we blogged a beautiful classic floral cake designed from an invitation. This is the same cake with the addition of a purple band around the bottom tier and a few accents on the leaves. Adding this third color really changes the look of the cake from classic to modern. It brings in one more element from the invitation as well.

Designing a cake around a wedding invitation might seem like a challenge to most – but I love the inspiration the textile world gives me. This modern invitation created the perfect color palette and floral decor for a subtle, yet captivating summer wedding cake.

Simply Silver

We love being able to put a little of our own creativity into our cakes. This bride asked us to create an embroidered pattern on her cake, but gave us no limitations. If you’ve been following this blog for any time at all, you’ll know that my style is simple and elegant. In most situations, I believe less is more. And this is a great example of that. I created a floral pattern that swirled around the cake from top to bottom using some of my favorite flower silhouettes. I added some leaves and tiny dots for accents and a shimmery silver fondant ribbon around the bottom of each tier. Check out the detailing on the ribbon… complete with stitching.

This stunning butter cream cake was adorned with champagne scrolls and gold flourishes. I love the alternating designs on different tiers. The scrolls lead your eye to the center tier of diamonds and pearls. The deep red roses add a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Check out this fantastic vintage wedding cake with diamond broaches. It features a beautiful hand piped scroll pattern in ivory. We adorned two of the tiers with a black fondant ribbon, but it looks like satin ribbon.

Henna Cake

We had the opportunity to be a part of a very special wedding and created this henna inspired butter cream cake. Flavors included red velvet with cream cheese filling, zucchini lime cake with Chantilly cream, and vegan carrot cake.

It’s rare that we duplicate a cake exactly as it was originally done by another designer, but our bride had her heart set on this amazing western themed wedding cake. We made a silicone mold of a concho and then recreated them out of sugar. The chocolate fondant is embossed with a western floral design. It definitely fit the theme of this rustic ceremony in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

I love the simplicity of this cake. It’s amazing what table decor can do to make your cake striking. The runners mimic the ribbon from the cake. This smooth buttercream cake was sprayed with shimmer and dusted with edible sparkles along the top surface of the cake which compliments the dangling crystal pedestal.

This buttercream cake was designed with paper in mind. Our bride brought us unique stationary from her wedding invitation and we recreated it with sugar. I love this color scheme of purple, green, and silver. The entire cake was sprayed with edible shimmer to make it sparkle!

I love making cakes that utilized inspiration from other components of the wedding. This cake was inspired by the couple’s invitation and location, the Beautiful Della Terra Mountain Châteaux in Estes Park. The branches were hand piped over stenciled pine cones. The copper birds were the perfect topper to compliment this design.

We had the pleasure of being a part of one of the most fantastic weddings I have seen in a very long time. A huge thank you to Paige Elizabeth for these fantastic photos! Sarah and Chris, thank you for letting us be a part of your wedding day.

This five tier cake was enrobed in white chocolate fondant and adorned with black satin ribbon and rhinestone broaches. The second tier was accented with black sugar lace and a monogram. Flavors included: Vanilla bean cake with chocolate espresso mousse, Orange rum cake with mandarin orange cream, and Red velvet with cream cheese filling.
